Scientific objectives
EMSO-LO is deployed in the Mediterranean Sea, at 2500m depth, 20 NM off the French coast.
The Mediterranean Sea is very sensitive to climate change and EMSO-LO offers a unique opportunity to observe the long-term environmental variations in the deep ocean. The North-West Mediterranean is also a convection zone, where the extreme events modifying the circulation of the deep waters affect the distribution of biogeochemical elements and the biodiversity. The main scientific objectives of EMSO-LO are to:
- study the impact of global change on the dynamics of water masses, of the acidification and oxygen depletion from the surface to the deep ocean,
- monitor marine biodiversity and life in the deep ocean,
- monitor local geophysics and local seismic activity
